Five days after the second bomb was dropped Japan would formally surrender marking the end of World War II. Whether or not the United States should have used the atomic bombs on Japan is an argument that has been debated for decades now. Those who say using the bombs was a good idea claim that it brought a quicker end to the war and may have saved the lives of thousands of American soldiers. However, the droppings of the bombs were war crimes that killed over two-hundred thousand people, the majority of which were civilians. It is also believed by many that the bombs may have been dropped as a way to intimidate the Soviets and were an unnecessary measure taken to achieve victory (Foner, 884).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The level of damage and destruction caused by the atomic bombs had never been seen before in history. It is estimated that around 140,000 of the 350,000 people living in Hiroshima and 70,000 of the 250,000 people living in Nagasaki were killed either from the immediate impact of the bomb or from the effects of radiation by the end of 1945 (Smith). Akihiro Takahashi was fourteen years old and was attending his school in Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped. According to Takahashi, when the blast came all he could see initially was darkness. When the darkness faded, he realized that the blast had blown him about ten meters from where he was originally standing and when he looked at himself, he noticed that his clothes were basically turned into rags and his skin was peeling and hanging from his body. After leaving the school to walk back to his house he saw several victims that had been burned badly as well including a woman and her baby who both had their s kin completely peeled off. Takahashi had to receive medical treatment for a year before he finally recovered. Only ten out of the sixty classmates at his junior high school survived. However, the bombing of Nagasaki happened later in the morning that day after the meeting was already taking place and the leaders of Japan were not informed of the news until early in the afternoon after the meeting was over so that could not have been the reason for them discussing the surrender. Hiroshima is unlikely to be the reason for the meeting either because if the leaders of Japan really considered it a crisis of utmost importance, they most likely would not have waited three days to act. On August 8, 1945, Togo Shigenori, the Foreign Minister at the time even asked for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima be discussed by the Supreme Council but the members of the Council rejected his request (Wilson).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   If the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not what the leaders of Japan were concerned with, their concern was most likely the Soviet Union. Since the United States was calling for unconditional surrender, in April 1941 Shigenori signed a neutrality pact with the Soviet Union in hopes that Stalin might moderate an agreement between the United States and Japan should the Japanese lose the war. Even though he knew the plan was a long shot, he knew it was in Stalins best interest for the agreement to not be too one-sided in favor of the United States. However, when the Soviets declared war and invaded Manchuria and Sakhalin Island on August 9, 1945, the Soviet Union became a belligerent, meaning that the idea of Stalin being a moderator was no longer possible. With the threat of invasion from both the Soviets and the Americans, Japanese leaders knew that any hope of defending their home islands was no longer feasible. This is why it is unlikely that the bombs were Japans reason for surrendering, thus making them unnecessary (Wilson).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Americans often see the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as being justified because they say thousands of lives may have been lost if an invasion were to take place (Foner, 844). After an hour or so of mildly intimidating slides, signed virginity pledges, and reiteration after reiteration of the â€Å"joys† of waiting to have sex until after marriage, we go on our way; some of us are affected, but most of us feel as much catharsis as if we’d just watched the evening news. While abstinence-only programs leave an impression on the conscience and hearts of some teens, offering them a new perspective on sexuality, the programs fail to give valid information, a fair perspective, or options to those teens who choose to be sexually active, a fault that has had dire consequences on our society. Although the idea of using scaretactics and moral questioning to force teenagers into celibacy is an appealing one, it is hardly rational. Abstinence-only programs do not delay the initiation of sexual activity, a choice that many teenagers make regardless of what they’ve been taught (National Sexuality Research Webpage). In fact, regardless of the barrage of abstinence-only programs in the United States since the Clinton Administration, forty-seven percent of teenagers have sexual intercourse by the time the reach the age of seventeen. For this forty-seven percent, abstinence-only programs are violating their basic human right to make their own informed decision about sex, sexuality, and how to practice â€Å"it† safely, leaving the fifty percent of teenagers ages 12-17 who want more information about their sexual health (The Kaiser Family Foundation) in the dark. Another tragic flaw in the design of abstinence-only programs is its refusal to give any information whatsoever about preventing pregnancy; instead, it focuses solely on the idea of waiting until marriage to have sex, which puts those teens already involved in sexual activity at a higher risk for unplanned pregnancy. With this refusal to focus on methods of birth control, it’s no wonder the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the industrialized world: one-third of girls experience a pregnancy before their twentieth birthday. Even more startling than this statistic is the proven fact that teenagers that are properly educated about birth control are more likely to use it when (and if) they become sexually active (LIVESTRONG. com News). With these hard facts and stunning results of a generation raised on abstinence-only education, where is the action for change? Disregarding the fact that abstinence-only programs fail to provide information about bir th control, the programs also fail to provide information about sexually transmitted diseases. Sure, instructors will â€Å"beat the dead horse† of the horrors and tragedies of contracting an STD without mercy, but they fail, epically at that, to provide any information on how to prevent these grotesque diseases they display, except for abstaining for sex altogether, a feat that obviously isn’t being accomplished by today’s teenager. In fact, the Center for Disease Control reported in 2007 that one in four sexual active teens between the ages of fourteen and nineteen contracted a sexually transmitted disease; fifteen percent of the aforementioned infected had more than one disease (Long). If that statistic doesn’t shock the proponents of abstinence-only programs, maybe the fact that approximately half of all new HIV infections occur in people under the age of twenty-five will (KFF). Not only are abstinence-only programs outdated and unrealistic, the y do not work as well as they should, cost tax-payers far too much money for their success rate (which is extremely low), and are not backed by the medical community or any prevalent statistics whatsoever. Americans are spending billions of dollars on a sexual educational system that is totally ineffective. Abstinence-only programs have received almost one and a half billion dollars in federal funding since 1993. Not only are we spending tons of cash on these programs, most of them are flawed to the point of intervention by Congress. Out of thirteen grant-receiving programs investigated by Congress in a 2004 study, only two were free of â€Å"major statistical errors and distortions. † What’s ironic about Congress’ findings is those two programs were the ones used the least nationwide (NSRW). Adding fuel to the refuters of abstinence-only programs is the lack of support by the vast majority of the medical field. Abstinence-only programs have been criticize d in official statements by many professional associations and organizations, including, but not limited to: the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, the National Association of School psychologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Public Health Association, all of whom maintain that sexual education must be comprehensive in order to be effective. Two-thirds of sex education programs focusing on abstaining and contraception had a positive effect on teen sexual behavior, compared to one-third in abstinence-only programs, according to a 2008 study (KFF). Regardless of whether the United States wants teenagers to be sexually active or not, some will choose to be so. For these teenagers, abstinence-only programs are detrimental to their physical well-being. Dr. Margret Blythe of the American Academy of Pediatrics even went as far as to assert that â€Å"there is evidence to suggest [the inaccuracies and distortions] in most of these programs are harmful and have negative consequences by not providing adequate information for those teens who do become sexually active. † (Long). The father (Egeus) is trying to make his daughter (hermia) marry someone she doesnt love (Demetrius). It is the struggle of young and old. Lysander who is in love with Hermia and is the reason Hermia and Demetius dont get married. And Egeus who is an old man with old beliefs about woman obeying their father or men and do what they say. The play is based around a love story between 4 people, a donkey and 2 fairies. Oberon (fairy) trys to make things right between Demetius and Helena but instead his servant Puck makes Lysander fall in love with Helena. He also makes the queen of the fairies fall in love with bottom who gets turned in to a donkey by Oberon and Puck. The roles of woman during Shakespeares time was totally different to today foe example they couldnt vote, couldnt work and had to do everything men told them to do. They had no say what so ever. Mens roles were to be the dominant sex. Since they did all the work and told women and told women what to do and they thought they owned them and controlled them. Shakespears role as a writer was to entertain people and to entertain himself. He also had a lot of royalty watch his shows. His purpose as a writer was also to put his thoughts across to other people. Arranged marriages were also apart of Shakespeares life therefore he put it in his play. The scene we have been studying is the scene, which has Demetrius and Helena in the woods. Helena is chasing Demetrius who is chasing Hermia. It is not that for into the play it is the first scene second act, which is virtually at the beginning. Demetrius is not two keen on Helena because she follows him everywhere and loves him but he doesnt her therefore it gets on his nerves and really annoys him. He shows his dislike for Helena by saying: I love thee not, therefore pursue me not Which tells her not to follow him since he does not love her. Helenas behavior towards Demetrius is stupid, she follows him everywhere since she loves him so much she states a metaphor that she is a dog: I am your spaniel; and, Demetrius The more you beat me, I will fawn on you Which means she is his dog and will let him beat her. She does all this because she loves him. Which happens today. Women let men beat them just because they love them and hope they will change. The effect on some people will be shocking at the fact that she will say this. Whereas some people will understand what she is going through. Men and women today will have these reactions.
